R-CCC capital projects plan presented to state legislators and county commissioners
(AHOSKIE) The senior leadership team at Roanoke-Chowan Community College met with state legislators, county commissioners and trustees of the College recently to brief them on the community college’s projected capital projects plan.
President Murray J. Williams presented in detail the need for new capital projects including a universal technical training center, a new fine arts building, and new a renovated allied health sciences building, saying these projects are “required to meet the needs of our community, local industries and healthcare providers for decades to come.”
“The impact these new projects will have on our community is bigger than the facilities,” said Ronald Gatling, chairman of the Hertford County Board of Commissioners (also a trustee of the college). “Through the partnerships represented here today, our College will offer the community and region many opportunities for future generations.”
After discussion, questions, and answers, the meeting concluded with general consensus of justification for funding the capital projects. It was noted that grant funds will be used to assist with funding the new universal technical training center.
Participating in the briefing were members of the College’s legislative delegation including Representative Howard J. Hunter, III, Senator Don Davis, and Senator Ernestine Bazemore; members of the College’s Board of Trustees including Trustee Albert Vann, Trustee Kimberly Turner, Trustee Ronald Gatling, and Trustee André Lassiter (also a Hertford County commissioner); Dr. William Wright, superintendent of Hertford County Public Schools; and David B. Cotton, Hertford County manager.
They were joined by R-CCC executive leaders, Stephanie Benson, executive vice president, workforce development & institutional effectiveness/executive director of the foundation; Dr. Jami Woods, vice president of instruction and student services; and Dr. Latoya Wiley, vice president of administrative and fiscal services.
“The greatest antidote to poverty is education,” concluded Commissioner Lassiter. “We have a tremendous opportunity to successfully position Hertford County and our region for the future.”
