Spotlight on Criminal Justice: Johnita Mitchell’s Impact at R-CCC
AHOSKIE, NC –March marks both Women’s History Month and National Criminal Justice Month, making it the perfect time to highlight an inspiring figure in the field. Johnita Mitchell, the Criminal Justice Program Coordinator at Roanoke-Chowan Community College (R-CCC), is not only an educator but also a dedicated Deputy Sheriff with the Hertford County Sheriff's Office.
Mitchell’s journey in criminal justice began at R-CCC, where she graduated in 2018 with an Associate in Arts & Science. She then continued her education at North Carolina Central University, earning both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Criminal Justice. Now, she brings her expertise back to the classroom, guiding students toward promising careers in the field.
A Unique and Valuable Program
R-CCC’s Criminal Justice program is designed to be flexible, allowing students to balance coursework with everyday life challenges. “This program provides students with knowledge in the criminal justice field and helps them apply what they’ve learned to future job opportunities,” says Mitchell.
Students gain critical skills such as analytical thinking, ethics, research and problem-solving while earning their Certificate in Criminal Justice Technology. These skills prepare them for various career paths, including law enforcement, corrections, juvenile justice, the judicial system and criminal justice advocacy.
Exciting Courses & Career Preparation
One of the standout courses in the program is Constitutional Law, which explores fundamental individual rights and how laws are applied at both the state and national levels. This course, along with others in the program, equips students with the necessary knowledge to succeed in criminal justice careers.
Beyond the classroom, Mitchell emphasizes the real-world impact of the program. “This program has helped me make a difference in my community while continuing my own education and teaching students,” she shares.
As fall advising and registration open, students interested in criminal justice have a valuable opportunity to learn from an experienced professional like Mitchell. Whether aspiring to protect their community, advocating for justice, or working within the legal system, R-CCC’s Criminal Justice program offers the foundation for success.
