R-CCC Hosts 4-H Speedway to Healthy Program

R-CCC Hosts 4-H Speedway to Healthy Program

AHOSKIE, NC –Roanoke-Chowan Community College (R-CCC) proudly served as the host site for the Speedway to Healthy Program, a dynamic, hands-on learning experience presented by Hertford County 4-H. From March 4-6, students from kindergarten through fifth grade raced through a 1,200-square-foot interactive exhibit designed to teach them about nutrition, health and wellness in a fun and engaging way.

The Speedway to Healthy Program, part of North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University’s 4-H Youth Development Program, transforms learning into an immersive adventure. As children move through the exhibit, they pretend to be food molecules, stopping at 11 interactive pit stops—including the brain, mouth, stomach, and other key areas of the body—where volunteers provide important lessons on healthy lifestyle choices. At the finish line, students discover how nutrition, health, and physical activity are all connected.

"At R-CCC, we are committed to fostering educational opportunities that empower young learners to make informed, healthy choices," said Dr. Murray J. Williams, President of R-CCC. "Our partnership with Hertford County 4-H allows us to engage with our community in a meaningful way, ensuring that students start building lifelong wellness habits early."

The program’s goals include improving children’s eating and health behaviors, helping them develop lifelong skills for maintaining wellness, and reinforcing the connection between food choices and overall health.

“We are greatly appreciative of Roanoke-Chowan Community College for allowing us to set up this exhibit. It is a great central location for our schools and provides a welcoming space for this program. The hospitality has been top-notch, and we truly value our relationship with R-CCC. We haven’t been able to host this event since 2019, and we are thrilled to bring it back,” said Vicki Wiggins, Hertford County Extension Agent, 4-H Youth Development.

R-CCC values its partnership with Hertford County 4-H and remains dedicated to supporting initiatives that educate, inspire and promote healthy habits among future generations.
