Quarterly Clergy Breakfast held at R-CCC
AHOSKIE, NC –Roanoke-Chowan Community College (R-CCC) held its quarterly Clergy Breakfast with local faith leaders on Friday, August 16. The event is an opportunity for pastors and local faith leaders to join the conversation about how to strengthen and build the community through education and outreach.
“We want to continue our conversations with local faith leaders as we develop ways to increase opportunities through education for those we serve in the Roanoke-Chowan area,” said R-CCC President Dr. Murray J. Williams. “Over the past few years, we have learned several strategies to help engage students and we are extremely grateful to those leaders who took time from their busy schedules to participate in our third event and pray over our college.”
Williams offered ways for churches to partner with the R-CCC Foundation and help raise funds to benefit the college’s students. She encouraged church leaders to have “Giving Sundays” where an R-CCC representative could attend Sunday services and share information about the college and Foundation. Church leaders were also advised about establishing scholarships through the Foundation.
“These funds help students who struggle to have the financial resources available. Your church can establish student scholarships and set the criteria for those scholarships,” explained Williams. “Giving helps our students, our community, and the workforce.”
R-CCC VP of Workforce & Institutional Advancement Steven Mathews emphasized the importance of giving to assist students and asked how R-CCC can better serve congregations. He provided question cards on each table and asked that faith leaders write down suggestions for ways the college could do better in serving the churches and community.
“This is one way I can get to know you better and learn about the needs that your congregation has. In the end, I serve you,” said Mathews. “Let’s keep this energy going.”
Focused prayers were given by Pastor James Shearn, Dr. Mary Harrell, Dr. Wallace Phillips, Pastor Donnie Graham and Rev. Johnetta Chavis for college administration, faculty, staff, students, enrollment growth, community leaders, and state and national leaders.
