R-CCC participates in Steps4Growth Clean Energy Pre-Apprenticeship program
(AHOSKIE) Roanoke-Chowan Community College was proud to sponsor the Steps4Growth Clean Energy Grant in partnership with NC A&T State University. The Clean Energy Pre-Apprenticeship program was created to prepare students for a career in the manufacturing sector, with a particular emphasis on renewable energy and related transferable skills.
This program was a collaboration between our Curriculum and Continuing Education departments in which courses were offered from both divisions to encompass the 90-hour course requirements to successfully complete the apprenticeship. Dr. Tanya Oliver, Vice President for Instruction & Student Services shared her insight on the apprenticeship program, “During the course of the program, participants were exposed to typical problems and challenges encountered in a modern manufacturing environment and gain first-hand experience in addressing them. The R-CCC Program proudly maintained 100% participation throughout the duration of the program. To gain more practical and on-site experience, students worked with local businesses including Dominion Power and Enviva. We are proud of the success of this program and look forward to continuing this great partnership with North Carolina A&T.”, Oliver adds.
"This was R-CCC’s first time conducting and hosting The Clean Energy Pre-Apprenticeship program covered by the Steps4Growth Clean Energy Grant in partnership with NC A&T State University. Through the various course offerings including that of Industrial Safety, Working Smart, Lean Six Sigma- Yellow Belt, OSHA -10, and CPR, our students were afforded an opportunity to be exposed to the manufacturing sector.”, states Dwayne Ponton, Dean for Business Technologies and Public Services. “The students proved that through hard work and dedication, they were able to successfully complete both 90 hours of summer curriculum and 80 hours of on-the-job training totaling 170 hours of hard work. R-CCC is grateful for being selected and afforded the opportunity to offer such an Apprenticeship to our community and looks forward to continued participation in the semesters ahead.", Ponton adds.
Stephanie Benson, Executive Vice President for Workforce Development and Executive Director of the Foundation states, “By combining hands-on training, classroom instruction and the obtainment of industry recognized credentials, participants gained essential skills that result in preparation for a range of careers in the energy and manufacturing industry. We are excited to add this pre-apprenticeship program to R-CCC's existing apprenticeship pathway options to provide a pipeline of skilled workers for our local employers.”
