STEM Camp Inspires Young Minds at R-CCC

STEM Camp Inspires Young Minds at R-CCC

AHOSKIE, NC – Roanoke-Chowan Community College (R-CCC) hosted a three-day STEM Outreach Camp during the week of June 17 on campus. STEM is the abbreviation for the four closely connected areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Students had the opportunity to make “lungs” using balloons and water bottles. They also studied viruses and learned about viral infections and how those infections can affect the lungs. Students made their own hand sanitizer and scented as desired. During a technology project session, campers learned about website design and had the chance to use creativity in designing a website using Canva.

Thirty-two rising 9th grade students participated in the camp, which also incorporated a college success course.

R-CCC Dean of Transfer and Health Sciences Michael Jefferson spearheaded the camp.

“The R-CCC Stem Outreach Camp provided our students with hands-on learning experiences where they could actively engage in experiments, projects and different challenges in the STEM areas. After all, learning should be exciting and enjoyable,” explained Jefferson. “We have dedicated expert instructors who are passionate and knowledgeable and really enjoy inspiring young minds. It was a great week.”

The College applied for and received a $5,000 Summer STEM Outreach grant from STEM EAST Network to host the event. Funding provides summer STEM outreach camps and activities for middle and high school students
