AHOSKIE, NC – Roanoke-Chowan Community College (R-CCC) has welcomed Samantha Matthews as its new Director of Admissions. Matthews began her post in July. She is a native to Northeastern North Carolina where she lives with her husband, Brandon Matthews and their daughter, Harper.
Most recently, Matthews served as Gates County High School’s counselor. While there, she counseled students to prepare them for careers and college acceptance. She also provided crisis intervention to students and collaborated with parents, teachers and administration on issues of student progress and needs.
Prior to that, Matthews was the Assistant Dean of Admissions at Chowan University in Murfreesboro where she served as a college counselor, enrolling undergraduate and transfer students. She managed database information and student workers in the department and provided budget and data analysis.
“I am excited to work in admissions again. I have been working with high school juniors and seniors for more than 17 years. I have been at the four-year level, the high school level, and I am excited to work at the two-year level because I think it is an excellent bridge between the two,” said Matthews.
In this role, Matthews will build and maintain relationships with other admissions professionals as well as maintain the database system. She will coordinate event planning and educate families about college admissions, financial aid and scholarship possibilities. Matthews will implement a comprehensive admissions program and provide guidance and resources to students as they navigate the college search and application process.
“It is my hope that by working with the recruitment and marketing team, we can grow the campus and show the community what R-CCC has to offer. We have not only great, transferable, academic courses and programs, but also friendly and helpful staff who can help them achieve their goals,” added Matthews.
“We are thrilled to welcome Samantha Matthews to Roanoke-Chowan Community College as our new Director of Admissions,” said R-CCC President Dr. Murray J. Williams. “Her extensive experience in both high school and college admissions makes her an invaluable addition to our team. Samantha’s dedication to guiding students through their educational journeys aligns perfectly with our mission to support student success and community engagement. We are confident that her expertise will enhance our admissions program and help us continue to provide exceptional support to students and their families.”
R-CCC Dean of Student Affairs Danielle Ruffin was excited to add an experienced admissions veteran like Matthews to the team. “Ms. Matthews brings years of valuable experience to R-CCC. She has eagerly jumped into the role and made great strides in a short time. We look forward to her continued contributions to our students, campus and community,” said Ruffin.
Matthews holds a Master of Education in School Counseling and a Master of Arts in Human Services – Criminal Justice, both from Liberty University and a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Chowan University.
