R-CCC hosts Salute to Veterans, Nov 11

AHOSKIE, NC – Roanoke-Chowan Community College (R-CCC) held a “Salute to Veterans” program on Nov. 11. The event’s guest speaker was Calvin L. Lawrence Sr., retired US Navy Master Chief Petty Officer E9.

“I send a heartfelt thanks to all veterans both those who are present and those who could not be with us on this day. Your legacy of service is a beacon of hope and a testament to the enduring spirit of our nation,” said R-CCC President Dr. Murray J. Williams. “The military holds a very special place in my heart. I had four brothers to serve in the military. I also had two nephews, and I currently have a great-niece who is serving, so I would like to honor their dedication and the sacrifice they have made, along with all other veterans on this day.”

“Today, we gather to pay tribute to the brave men and women who have served our nation with unwavering dedication and courage. As we reflect on the sacrifices made by our veterans, let us also celebrate their resilience, their strength, and the individual contribution they have made to our country and our communities,” added Williams.

Originally from Edenton, NC, Lawrence has more than 30 years of military service. After retiring from the military, he taught Naval Science and Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps at Lee-Davis High School with Hanover County Public Schools in Virginia. He began the event address by thanking those who raised their hand to serve the country and have helped keep its citizens safe.

“We are the ones who answer the call to defend the American flag, its borders and air space,” said Lawrence, who recounted past conflicts and wars of the current generation. “Veterans have fought in locations around the world… Many gave not only their time and livelihood, but also gave their lives.”

Lawrence also talked about legacy, loyalty, service and sacrifice. He explained that there are those who join the military to find a sense of purpose, belonging and respect. “It was an honor for me that I was allowed to serve and defend this land. The men and women who have served our country at home and abroad are heroes. Their sacrifices, many unseen and untold, have secured the freedoms for generations of Americans,” he said.

In closing remarks, Lawrence discussed the sacrifices that he and his family made during his extensive military career. He also highlighted the veteran brotherhood, service, duty and teaching respect for our veterans.

“Let us take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices and bravery of the men and women who have served in our armed forces. Their courage, their selflessness and commitment to our country have shaped the freedoms we hold dear. On this Veterans Day, we honor their service and express our deepest gratitude. Whether they served in times of peace or in times of conflict, their contributions have made our nation stronger and more resilient. Let us continue to support and uplift our veterans not just today but every day,” said R-CCC Executive Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs Dr. Tanya Oliver.
