Seven students complete Phlebotomy Training Course

AHOSKIE, NC –Roanoke-Chowan Community College (R-CCC) Phlebotomy Training and Clinical students completed 220 hours of coursework including theory and clinical experience on Dec. 3. Seven students completed the course including Kirsten Baggett, Tyiesha Joyner, Nyasia Mizzelle, Roslynn Morris, Cheynne Smith, Delisa Stephenson and Samantha Weathersby. Ashley Porter, MLT ASCP was the instructor. The course was delivered in a hybrid format, with some course components delivered online and others in-person.

The Phlebotomy course provides theory and clinical experiences needed for proper collection of blood and other specimens used in diagnostic testing. Topics include ethics, legalities, medical terminology, safety, infection control, patient relations, anatomy and physiology and specimen collection. Upon completion, students should be able to safely perform procedures necessary for specimen collection on patients in various health care settings.

“It has been such a privilege to work with these students and see the hard work they have put into completing the program. They will be able to use the skills and techniques they have learned to be successful in a career in healthcare. They have a bright future ahead,” said Porter.

Upon successful completion of the theory and clinical experience, students are eligible to sit for the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) examination, which is the national certification exam. While certification is a voluntary process, many employers prefer to hire certified practitioners. Currently, North Carolina does not require licensure or certification for phlebotomists. According to Salary.com, the average base salary for certified phlebotomists in the state is nearly $40,000.

"Congratulations to the seven dedicated students who recently completed the rigorous 220-hour Phlebotomy Training and Clinical program at Roanoke-Chowan Community College. Their commitment to mastering both the theory and hands-on clinical skills required for this vital healthcare profession is commendable. By successfully completing this hybrid program, they are now well-equipped to make a meaningful impact in the healthcare field, providing essential diagnostic services with professionalism and care. We celebrate their achievements and wish them success as they pursue national certification and embark on rewarding careers," said R-CCC President Dr. Murray J. Williams.
