Classes prepare employees to work smart in the workplace
(AHOSKIE) Getting a new job in today’s workplace may require some new skills that you didn’t need before the Covid-19 pandemic. From Zoom meetings, to working with a team from home, to problem solving and doing more with less, employees today must be prepared.
“Employers are looking for people who not only have the technical skills and experience to do the job, but also bring the ‘soft skills’ that lead to success,” according to Ja’queta Pugh-Stevenson, Coordinator of Human Resources Development and Career Readiness Certificate Program at Roanoke Chowan Community College.
Pugh-Stevenson, who also serves as the NC Works Hertford County Liaison, offers on-going classes in human resources development to prepare employees for a new career or a change in careers. Many of the classes are offered free of charge.
During the months of February and March, there are many upcoming classes including a resume writing workshop and ‘Linked in’ training to help get a job. Tuesdays in March, there is a Zoom course for beginners called ‘Let’s Zoom, Zoom, Zoom’.
“We also offer a course on Team Building Strategies to learn the simple of strategies of effective team building,” says Pugh-Stevenson.
‘Working Smart – Soft Skills for Workplace Success is a popular series of classes to develop self -awareness, and management, work ethics, communication skills, and problem solving skills. Certification in ‘Working Smart’ is available.
Training to become an ‘income maintenance caseworker’ for social services is available at R-CCC. This is a training course (partially free to students) that allows you to work at any department of social services in the state. Pugh-Stevenson teaches the first Phase I and a DSS current or previous employee will teach the Phase II.
