Students complete R-CCC Phlebotomy Training Course
AHOSKIE, NC –Roanoke-Chowan Community College (R-CCC) Phlebotomy Training and Clinical students recently completed 220 hours of coursework including theory and clinical experience. Six students completed the course including Brianna Forehand, Kyesha Harrell, Katie Kelly, Maria Mendoza, Crystal Rountree and Margarita Torres-Ibarra. Ashley Porter, MLT ASCP was the instructor. The course was delivered in a hybrid format, with some course components delivered online and others in-person.
“It has been a joy and a privilege to see these students overcome many challenges and work so hard to complete this program. These students will now be able to utilize these skills, knowledge and techniques to be successful in a career in the healthcare industry. I am excited about their future and the success of this program at R-CCC,” said Porter. Students balanced working full-time jobs, clinicals, family responsibilities and 12-hour shifts at work to complete the course.
The Phlebotomy course provides theory and clinical experiences needed for proper collection of blood and other specimens used in diagnostic testing. Topics include ethics, legalities, medical terminology, safety, infection control, patient relations, anatomy and physiology and specimen collection. Upon completion, students should be able to safely perform procedures necessary for specimen collection on patients in various health care settings.
Upon successful completion of the theory and clinical experience, students are eligible to sit for the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) examination, which is the national certification exam. While certification is a voluntary process, many employers prefer to hire certified practitioners. Currently, North Carolina does not require licensure or certification for phlebotomists. According to Salary.com, the average base salary for certified phlebotomists in the state is nearly $40,000.
R-CCC President Dr. Murray J. Williams congratulated the students for completing the course. “We are continuing to build our Allied Health area, and these students show that hard work and determination pay off. They are well prepared to take on future opportunities in the healthcare field. We are so pleased with their positive results and plan to continue to grow our offerings so that students are successfully connecting to great careers.”
