Lisa Bynum Named New TRiO Counselor at Roanoke-Chowan Community College

AHOSKIE, NC –Roanoke-Chowan Community College (R-CCC) proudly announces the appointment of Lisa Bynum as its new TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) Counselor. Bynum officially began her role on Jan. 6, 2025, bringing a deeply personal and professional commitment to student success and community empowerment.

A native of Ahoskie, NC, Bynum holds both a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degree in Psychology from North Carolina Central University. Her diverse background spans psychotherapy, psychological and cognitive assessments, case management, project management, and clinical and community research. She has held impactful positions at institutions including Duke Pain Medicine Clinic, Wake Forest University School of Medicine, North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services: Division of Services for the Blind, The Aya Center, Elite Bio-Behavioral Health, and the Center for Translation Health and Equality Research at NCCU: Diabetes Family Project.

For Bynum, joining R-CCC represents more than a new professional chapter—it’s a homecoming and a heartfelt mission.

“What interested me most about working at R-CCC is the opportunity to give back to my hometown community in a positive and lasting way,” said Bynum. “As a former teen mom and first-generation college student, I understand the unique challenges many of our students face. I want to be the voice of encouragement they remember when they feel like giving up—the reminder that they are capable, worthy, and supported.”

Her passion for student support is matched by her belief in the power of resilience. “What was once seen as a disadvantage in my life became my greatest blessing—it taught me perseverance,” Bynum shared. “Now, I hope to help my students discover the same strength within themselves.”

Bynum’s vision for her role at R-CCC extends beyond academics. “I hope to be a source of light and nourishment for growth—empowering students to become the best versions of themselves,” she said. “Working at a community college is the best decision I’ve ever made, because I truly have a passion for people.”
R-CCC President Dr. Murray J. Williams expressed her excitement about Bynum joining the team, “Lisa Bynum brings not only a wealth of professional experience but also a deeply personal understanding of the challenges our students face,” said Williams. “Her commitment to uplifting and inspiring others aligns perfectly with the mission of TRiO and R-CCC. We are thrilled to welcome her back to Ahoskie and know that she will be a tremendous asset to our students and our college community.”

Outside of her professional life, Bynum is a proud mother to two sons—Sincere (19) and Noah (9)—and enjoys cooking, listening to music, and spending quality time with her loved ones. She is the daughter of Larry and Dianne Bynum and one of seven siblings.

Roanoke-Chowan Community College is excited to welcome Lisa Bynum to the TRiO SSS team and looks forward to the lasting impact she will make on the lives of students and the community.
