Students complete R-CCC NAI Night Training Course
AHOSKIE, NC –Roanoke-Chowan Community College (R-CCC) Nurse Aide I (NAI) Night course students recently completed 190 hours of coursework. Thirteen students completed the course including Ashley Casey, Layla Farmer, Sheral Fleetwood, Kaitlynn Godwin, Aliza Jernigan, Alliyah Mathews, Terri Robinson, Darrien Sanders, Keishara Smith, Emma Stephenson, Shanell Stokes, Camryn Taylor and Alexis Vann. Course instructors were Crystal Cherry and Angela Jones.
“First and foremost, the role of a CNA is rooted in compassion. During the program, each student witnessed firsthand the vulnerability of those they cared for and the importance of offering not just medical assistance, but also emotional support. Whether it was holding a patient's hand during a difficult procedure or simply lending a listening ear, the capacity for empathy was shown through countless interactions with patients and their families. These moments of connection remind us that behind every diagnosis is a human being deserving of dignity and respect,” explained Cherry.
The NAI course prepares graduates to provide personal care and perform basic nursing skills for the elderly and other adults. Communication, safety, patient’s rights, personal care, vital signs, elimination, nutrition, restorative care and rehabilitation in long-term care settings are covered in class. The course also includes CPR.
Upon successful completion of the course, students are eligible to take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Exam through the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. The exam consists of a written or oral portion and a skills demonstration portion. Each candidate must successfully complete both exam components before a state can add their name to the state nurse aide registry, which is used to assure employers that a potential hire has met the federal and state requirements for employment.
Job outlook for nurse aides, also known as certified nursing assistants, is positive and employment is projected to grow at or above average. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, national employment for nurse aides will grow 4-5% through 2033. In North Carolina, jobs in the field are expected to grow 11% over the next decade. The average salary for certified nurse aides in the state is around $32,000 with salaries in cities like Charlotte, Greensboro and Durham paying above average. Nurse aides are employed in various settings including assisted living centers, doctor’s offices, home care agencies, hospice, hospitals, nursing homes and retirement homes.
R-CCC President Dr. Murray J. Williams congratulated the students for completing the course. “Congratulations to the dedicated students who have successfully completed the Nurse Aide I Night course here at Roanoke-Chowan Community College.
