NUCOR Steel Partners with R-CCC to Strengthen Welding Education
AHOSKIE, NC –Roanoke-Chowan Community College (R-CCC) is proud to announce a significant materials donation from NUCOR Steel, one of the nation’s leading steel manufacturers housed locally here in Hertford County. NUCOR has made yet another generous donation of plate steel to R-CCC’s welding program, a contribution that continues to have a profound impact on the college’s workforce training initiatives and students.
This substantial donation provides welding students at R-CCC with increased opportunities to refine their skills using industry-specific materials, ensuring they are well-prepared for careers in advanced manufacturing and welding. The additional resources allow students to gain hands-on experience with high-quality plate steel, mirroring the materials and processes they will encounter in real-world manufacturing settings.
"We are extremely grateful for NUCOR’s continued support in enhancing our welding program," said Steven Mathews, Vice President of Workforce and Institutional Advancement at R-CCC. "This donation is not only an investment in our students but also in the future workforce of our community and our region of Eastern North Carolina. By working with materials directly from industry, our students will gain the critical skills needed to thrive in high-demand welding careers."
Beyond benefiting current welding students, this donation enables R-CCC to offer our next short-term welding classes at no cost to both community members and high school students. By eliminating financial barriers, the college is opening doors for individuals who may have been unable to access technical training in the past. These free training classes start March 3 for day classes and March 10 for evening and weekend.
R-CCC remains committed to fostering industry partnerships that enhance educational programs and create opportunities for students. With the support of corporate leaders like NUCOR Steel, the college continues to expand its mission of providing high-quality, accessible workforce training.
"This generous donation from NUCOR Steel is a testament to the power of industry-education partnerships in strengthening our local workforce," said Dr. Murray J. Williams, R-CCC President. "By providing our students with hands-on experience using high-quality materials, we are equipping them with the skills and confidence needed to excel in welding and advanced manufacturing careers. We deeply appreciate NUCOR’s continued support in shaping the future of our region’s workforce."
